F16 IFF
• F16 IFF Panel
This is the older block of IFF panel that is located in the left aux console. It has these metal fins 10 digit, plastic back lighted thumb wheels. The thumb wheels on the authentic parts are made of metal and the digit wheels are made of Acrylic. Each wheel is glued together into one unit. It also has some intricate internal mechanism to create the stops and has a 10 digital electronic digital reader (or what do you call that thing?). Each is arranged on a metal “card.” I did not module this mechanism, as most of use simmer don’t care, because we probably would use an encoder for this. The thumb wheels and digit wheels are modeled as one unit so we can just send it to a 3D printer to be printed out. Also, the numbers are also “debossed” into the digit wheel so the numbers can be printed also in one shot. You could, of course disable the debossed numbers and then paint the numbers on later yourself, if your FDM printer can’t print out these debossed numbers.
The lighting of this panel is also very “odd” and old fashioned. It has 5 of the front facing light bulbs, each having a rubber washer and a black cap containing the light bulb inside. The bulbs internally light up the Acrylic panel plate. It’s odd, because they occupies the valuable front fact space, although it’s convenient to replace the bulbs from the front without having to take the panel off the left aux console.
One interesting tidbit of this “transponder” is that it’s FAA Technical Service Order’d. Eh? I thought only the civilian stuff needs to be TSO’d. Is this also used in commercial aircraft?
NOTE: You will also need the the several of the buttons/lights/toggles. All these can be downloaded in one shot here.
